The first mobile phone was demonstrated by John F. Mitchell and Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, but it was not until 1979 that the first cellular network was created in Japan. Digital networks started to rollout in the early 90’s with 2G and then 3G. Fast forward to now and countries are racing to rollout 5G. According to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA) there are over 8 billion mobile phone connections globally, compared to a global population of around 7.8 billion.
